HUDO Centre Date: 29th March 2019 No. H.K/UA/08/019 URGENT ACTION ARREST OF SULIMAN ELHAJ BY NISS IN UM-ROWABA, SUDAN On 24th March 2019, Mr. Suliman Elhaj was inhumanly arrested by NISS in Um-Rowaba. The reason behind his arrest is unknown. From the time of his arrest, he has been held incommunicado and he is suspected to be under torture. Mr. Suliman Elhaj Mohammed Elbashir is a 22 years old and student at Khartoum University. After the war erupted in South Kordufan in 2011, they have been displaced (together with his family) from Elfaid Um-Abdalla of South Kordufan to Um-Rowaba of North Kordufan where they are currently residing. On 24thMarch 2019 at around 04:00 PM, nine armed soldiers dressed in NISS uniform came on two vehicles to Mr. Suliman’s family home and knocked the gate while shouting his name. Mr. Suliman came to meet them at the gate followed by his mother, when he appeared to them, immediately five soldiers started beating him with black hoses and sticks in front of his mother while shouting at him thus “you are a rebel displaced from Elfaid and we shall chasten and educate you”. They took him away in their vehicles, but his mother followed them up to NISS office. While at NISS office, the mother was chased away and they told her that, “your son needs to be punished” and she was warned not to come back. Since then Mr. Suliman has been held incommunicado and he is suspected to be undergoing torture. HUDO is very concerned about the situation of IDPs from conflict areas and calls upon;  Sudan government to disclose the status of Mr. Suliman Elhaj and to allow family and lawyers to visit him.  Sudan government to immediately release Mr. Suliman or to present him before courts of law.  NISS in Um-Rowaba to hold to account the soldiers who were responsible for Suliman’s inhuman treatment.
