Date: 5th January 2021 No. H.K/PS/02/021 PRESS STATEMENT WOMAN SHOT AND INJURED IN UMBREMBETA, SUDAN On 26thDecember 2020, in Umbrembeta and for unknown reason, Ms. Huaida Mohammed Farag was shot and injured by someone covered with a face mask. The case was reported at Umbrembeta police against anonymous. On 26thDecember 2020 (around 10:00 pm Sudan local time), while Ms. Huaida Mohammed Farag sleeping with her ten (10) years old son at her house in Umbrembeta town, unknown armed person with a facial mask knocked at the house gate while calling her by name. Immediately after she had opened the gate, the armed person shot her and runaway. Ms. Huaida’s neighbours heard the gunshot and came running to the scene only to find her left leg is injured. They took her to the town hospital and then after on the following day (27 th December 2020) she was taken by her relative to Elobeid town for further medical treatment. The case was reported by her family at Umbrembeta police against anonymous. Ms. Huaida Mohamad Farag is 29 years old, single mother and tea maker/ tea seller at Umbrembeta town. Umbrembeta is a town in Abu-Kershola Locality of Nuba Mountains/ South Kordufan State and in a distant of about 40 km South Abu-Kershola town. Elobeid town is the capital of North Kordufan state. HUDO Centre is very concerned about the situation of civilians in conflict areas and calls upon:  Sudan government at state and central level to immediately investigate this case.  Sudan government to address the state of insecurity in South Kordufan/ Nuba Mountains.  Sudan government to ensure that the safety of civilians in conflict areas is guaranteed  Sudan government to disarm people with unlicensed firearms.
