HUDO Centre Date: 10th October 2024 No.: H.K/UA/13/024 URGENT APPEAL UNJUSTIFIED LONG DETENTION OF MR. ABDALLA IN Al-QADARIF, SUDAN Since 3rd May 2024, Mr. Abdalla Abdelmajid has been in detention under poor conditions. He has been under long detention regardless of the fact that police investigators found no case against him and recommended that he should be released. This affected his wellbeing (life) and family. On 3rd May 2024, Mr. Abdalla Abdelmajid Awad-Eljeed was arrested by General Intelligence Service (GIS) in Gallabat at the checkpoint of the border with Ethiopia while he was traveling by road to Ethiopia. At first, GIS interrogated him while accusing him to be a supporter of Rapid Support Force (RSF). GIS seized his laptop, smart phone and money. On 5th May 2024, Mr. Abdalla was transferred from GIS detention to the central police office in Al-Qadarif. The case was filed against him under article 177 of Sudan criminal penal 1991 while his items were remained seized by the GIS. On 8th May 2024, Mr. Abdalla was interrogated again by the police investigator and this time, the complainant was the Real Estate Bank in Al-Qadarif. On 18th May 2024, the police interrogation concluded that the case should be dropped because of lack of evidence. However, Mr. Abdalla was intentionally kept in the police custody under the prosecutor’s order and on 26th May 2024, he was transferred to the state prison in Al-Qadarif. On 1st June 2024, the police submitted the case file to the prosecutor recommending that, the defendant should be released without any condition and to drop the case. But the prosecutor ignored their recommendation and kept renewing Mr. Awad-Eljeed’s detention orders.
