support, strategic partnerships, rights empowerment, capacity building, research and advocacy. 1.3 A Brief Background Since the year (2022) began, Sudan continued to experience political and human rights challenges. The political scene is still dominated by military as the coup leaders continue to hold on to power with a temporary cabinet and no clear politically agreed vision regarding transition. The country has been experiencing unrest and violent crackdowns on mass protests since the army forcefully took over power on October 25 2021. This derailed the fragile transition from military to civilian rule. The coup leaders released from prison most of the former regime members1 who were facing legal cases. They also released the bank accounts of more than one thousand companies and individuals’ which were frozen (seized) by Empowerment Removal Committee (ERC) but, within less than two weeks the bank accounts were seized again (appendix – 1)2. Following the continuous massive protests by civilians’ across the country, the UN urged security forces not to use excessive force against protesters in the midst of anticoup demonstrations. The UN experts also called for quicker investigations in the killings that happened after the coup in Sudan. The political situation in Sudan is uncertain and the civil political groups are torn between the supporters of the coup and those who demand for the coup leaders to relinquish power to civilian.
