HUDO Centre 10th October 2017 Update (2) COURT TRIAL OF AL-SANADRA CASE The third (3rd) court session was conducted on 3rd October 2017 before Justice/ Abdeen Hamad Dhahi at Khartoum north court and all parties were present except one defendant from who attended the previous session. The judge adjourned court to 18th October 2017 Summary of the court session On 3rd October 2017, the court session started at 12:30 PM before Justice Abdeen Hamad Dhahi. It was attended by the prosecutor Mr. Mohamed Alsafi, the victims’ lawyers (accusation panel) led by Mr. Baroud, the defendants’ lawyers led by Mr. Amir, the military’s legal consultant, the defendants and the general public including activists and journalists. In attendance also was Mr. Yasir Mohammed Ahmed an official from the legal aid department under the ministry of justice to defend the juvenile (underage) defendant-Hassan Ramadan, 14 years old. But another lawyer Mr. Abu-Algasim Mohammed Ahmed showed up as a family lawyer to represent the accused juvenile. The court session started with registration of defendants as the list from the investigator’s minutes indicate below; 1. Hassan Ismail Ramadan, 14 years old, illiterate and a resident of Al-Abbasiya town. 2. Ahmed Jazim Hamid Gebreil, 34 years old, married, resident of Al-Abbasiya town and a member of Popular Defense Forces (PDF). 3. Saied Abdalla Al-Saied Mustafa, 30 years old, married, resident of Al-Abbasiya town and Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) soldier. 4. Ahmed Al-Tayeb Al-Zain Al-khair, 38 years old, married, illiterate, resident of Al-Abbasiya town and a member of Popular Defense Forces (PDF). 5. Al-sadiq Mohammed Rahma, 45 years old, married, illiterate, resident of Al-Abbasiya town and a member of Popular Defense Forces (PDF). 6. Bardab Mohammed Abakar, 30 years old, married, illiterate, resident of Al-Mowaileh village, farmer/cultivator and a member of Popular Defense Forces (PDF). 1

Brief description: On 2nd Sept 2016, Public Defense Force (PDF) soldiers on more than twenty motorcycles accompanied by two land cruiser vehicles attacked Al-Sanadra village in Al-Abbasiya locality in South Kordufan state. The attack was based on a claim that some cattle were looted and the footsteps passed through Al-Sanadra village. As a result of the attack, nine (9) people were killed, about twenty (20) wounded and some houses were looted and burnt down, cattle were looted as well as displacement of many residents of Al-Sanadra. The authorities (state/security) first ignored the case but later considered it after much pressure from citizens/public. The case was opened at Al-Abbasiya police office. The lawyers’ of the victims (Accusation panel) requested for the transfer of court to Khartoum and it was accepted.
