UPDATE ON
THE ARREST OF DR. HASSAN HAMZA BY JSC IN ROSERIES,
SUDAN
On 6th June 2025, the Joint Security Cell (JSC) released Dr. Hassan Hamza. This was
after the intervention of the community leaders and the administration of Blue Nile
university. He was arrested because of his past political activities during the era of
transitional government.
On 1st June 2025, soldiers from Joint Security Cell (JSC) in Roseries arrested Dr. Hassan from
his house in Roseries immediately after his return from exile in Ethiopia. He was held
incommunicado at the JSC detention up to the day of his release. During interrogation, Dr.
Hassan was questioned about his past political activities when he was a member of the national
economic committee within the transitional period. He was also asked whether he is still
communicating with the former prime minister Mr. Abdalla Hamdouk.
On 6th June 2025, Dr. Hassan was released after the intervention of some community leaders
and the administration of the Blue Nile university. He was released after the university
administration had signed a pledge promising that Dr. Hassan will be only concentrating on his
education and research job (academics).
HUDO Centre is concerned about the safety of civilians in Sudan during this difficult period of
fighting between SAF and RSF and calls for the following:
The JSC in Blue Nile State to stop arresting civilian people arbitrarily and releasing them
with stringent conditions that affect their rights and freedoms.
The head of the security committee in Blue Nile State (the governor) to investigate the
circumstances surrounding this arrest and make the findings public.
Sudan government to respect the rights of civilians.
