HUDO Centre 19th March 2018 PRESS STATEMENT ASSASSINATION OF THREE CIVILIANS BY SPLA-N SOLDIERS IN KALENDA VILLAGE OF SUDAN On 2nd March 2018, three unarmed civilians were murdered in Kalenda village of South Kordufan/ Sudan by SPLA-N soldiers led by an officer. The reason for the murder is not known yet. In the morning of 2nd March 2018, about eleven (11) armed soldiers of SPLA-N led by Captain/ Mutaz Mohammed Ateeya came to the house of Mr. Omer Yousif Omer. On entering the house, the soldiers started beating Mr. Omar using whips in front of his wife Aisha and ordered him to go with them. Due to his resistance, one of the soldiers shot him on the head and he died. Then the wife (Aisha) yelled for help and as a result, two of the neighbours Adam Emam Jubara and Mohammed Abdelraheem Kabashi came to Omar’s house. Immediately, the SPLA-N soldiers captured the two neighbours and moved with them out of Kalenda village. The two men were later found dead with bullet wounds two (2) kilometers western Kalenda village. Kalenda village is about fifteen (15) km west Al-Abbasiya town in South Kordufan State and its location is between the government and SPLA-N controlled areas. Mr Omer Yousif Omer, 63 years old, was the Shaikh/ village chief of Kalenda village; Mohammed Abdelraheem Kabashi, 39 years old, was the head of Kalenda popular committee and Adam Emam Jubara, 48 years old is Kalenda’s resident. A reliable source informed HUDO that, the SPLA-N troop which was led by the captain were arrested by their authority and they will face a trial in attendance of the victims’ family representatives HUDO is very concerned about the safeguard of civilian in SK and calls upon;  The SPLA-N to hold the captain and his troop to account for this act and to make it public.  Sudan government and SPLA-N to respect the international humanitarian law in safeguarding civilians in conflict areas.  Sudan government should safeguard civilians’ rights of security and life.
