HUDO Centre Date: 28th August 2022 No.: H.K/PS/44/022 PRESS STATEMENT FAMILY MEMBERS SHOT BY UNIDENTIFIED PEOPLE IN LAGAWA, SUDAN On 17th August 2022, unidentified armed people shot and killed a farmer together with his son (underage). His sister was also shot at but she survived with injuries. The three were shot at along the way from their farm at Al-Fugaraa village of Lagawa. This murder case was reported to Lagawa police but, there was no response. On 17th August 2022, Mr. Ahmed Musa Al-Ahmar together with his son (Adam) and sister (UmJumaa) were moving from their farm when armed people randomly shot at them along the road. As a result the father and son died instantly with chest and abdomen injuries but the sister survived with injuries on her left arm. After shooting, the attackers disappeared. Later, the relative and residents were informed by the injured sister and they collected the dead bodies and took them with the injured lady/ sister to Lagawa hospital. They also reported this murder case at Lagawa police before burial. The bodies were buried at their village Al-Fugaraa. Up to now (time of issuing this statement), police did not carry out the necessary investigations or even visit the crime scene. A community leader in Lagawa informed HUDO Centre that, this time of the year (cultivation season), conflicts between the nomads (of Arab ethnic group) and cultivators/ farmers (of Nuba ethnic groups) increase, that this year particularly, the tensions are high. Mr. Ahmed Musa Al-Ahmar (50 years old), Adam Ahmed Musa (11 years old) and son of Ahmed Musa, Ms. Um-Jumaa Musa Al-Ahmar (40 years old) she is a sister of Ahmed Musa. Al-Fugaraa is a village about 7 km East of Lagawa town/ the capital of Lagawa locality in West Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains but it falls within a territory controlled by Sudan People Liberation Army–North (SPLA-N). HUDO Centre is very concerned about the security situation and the safety of civilians in conflict areas and calls upon;    Police in west Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains to execute their duties responsibly and to immediately investigate this case. The prosecutor in West Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains to ensure that there is rule of law.
