HUDO Centre Date: 7th February 2019 No.: H.K/PR/13/019 PRESS STATEMENT (For immediate release) ARREST OF THREE PEOPLE BY NISS IN DAMAZIN/ SUDAN On 4th February 2019, three people were arrested by NISS in Damazin for having participated in a peaceful protest. They were released on same day/evening on condition that they report to NISS office every morning. On 4th February 2019, National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) in Damazin of Blue Nile State arrested Mr. Saif-Elnasr Minalla Mahmoud, 42 years old, public servant; Mr. Abduelaziz Sureiba, 43 years old, teacher and social activist; Mr. Ali Hajo Ali, 36 years old and civil servant. The arrest was because of their participation in a peaceful protest on the previous day (3rd February 2019) at Damain Main Street. On the same day evening (4th February 2019) they were released on condition that they report to NISS office every morning. Since December 2018, demonstrations have been going on in many towns of Sudan including Damazin where people are demanding for their basic rights and political reforms. The security forces responded with excessive force towards demonstrators which caused loss of lives and many have been arrested. HUDO is very concerned about the human rights situation during this time of demonstrations in Sudan. HUDO calls upon;  Sudan government to stop targeting, arresting and intimidating citizens.  Sudan government to respect its international obligations towards citizens’ rights.  NISS in Damazin to stop intimidating and harassing people.
