HUDO Centre Date: 24th February 2020 No.: H.K/PS/05/020 PRESS STATEMENT (For immediate release) ARREST AND INTIMIDATION OF SULIMAN BY MI IN RASHAD, SUDAN On 12th February 2020, the military intelligence (MI) in Rashad of South Kordufan State/ Nuba Mountains arrested Mr. Suliman Adam Suliman. The arrest was based on allegations that Mr. Suliman is a member of SPLM. He was detained for the whole day and released in the evening. On 12th February 2020 morning hours, three soldiers of Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) arrested Mr. Suliman Adam Suliman (63 years old and tailor) from his work place at Rashad town. They took him to MI office at Rashad military base. While there, he was interrogated about his past political activities of 2011 when he was a member of Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and candidate for South Kordufan State legislative council (2011) elections. The same day (evening hours), Mr. Suliman was released after being threatened that he will be arrested and tortured if he expresses any kind of association with Sudan People Liberation Army – North (SPLA-N). HUDO is very concerned about the situation of civilians in conflict areas and calls upon;  Sudan government to hold to account the soldiers responsible for Mr. Suliman’s arrest and intimidation.  Sudan government to reserve and protect the civilians’ political rights.  Sudan government to end the state of emergency in conflict areas which enables Sudan armed forces and its militias to carry out arrests at will.  Sudan government to stop any kind of negative reacts towards violations against citizens in conflict areas committed by security forces.  Sudan government to respect its international obligations towards their citizens.
