GIS ARRESTED MR. KHABIR IN ABU-JUBEIHA, SUDAN
On 20th May 2025, the General Intelligence Service (GIS) in Abu-Jibaiha released with condition
Mr. Khabir Ahmed from their detention after spending more than three (3) weeks.
On 29th April 2025 at 12:00 pm (Sudan local time), a group of soldiers from General Intelligence Service
(GIS) came with a vehicle and arrested Mr. Ahmed Nasr El-Tijani (nickname; Khabir) from his friend's
Shop in Abu-Jibaiha market. He was taken to the GIS building in Abu-Jibaiha where the access is
restricted. Mr. Ahmed was held incommunicado and his family members and lawyers were not allowed
to visit him.
He was arrested because of writing and posting on his Facebook page criticizing and opposing the call
by the political Islamic militia (Baraa militia). Baraa militia has been mobilizing the youth within the
eastern region of South Kordufan to join its ranks. Their call was based on religion indicating that Islam
is in danger during the current war.
On 20th May 2025, Mr. Khabir was released from the GIS detention centre in Abu-Jibaiha after he signed
a pledge in the presence of his father that he will not criticize the government or their allied militias and
that he will refrain from engaging in any political activity.
HUDO Centre is concerned about the safety of civilians in Sudan during this difficult period of fighting
between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, and calls for the following:
The GIS in Abu-Jibaiha to stop arresting people arbitrarily and releasing them with stringent
conditions that affect their rights and freedoms.
The head of the security committee in South Kordufan State (the governor) to investigate the
circumstances surrounding this arrest and make the findings public.
Sudan government to respect the rights of civilians.
